No. 8 in the initial College Football Playoff rankings, it’s a bit of a slap in the face – actually, it’s a big punch – to a TCU team with a better resume than No. Baylor. But the team is red hot, ripping through Texas, Kansas State, Iowa State and West Virginia, and now the fun begins. Beat No. 1. 4 Oklahoma State on the road, and then it’s fun time with a 1. Horned Frogs will beat Kansas – before going to Oklahoma.
In a 2. 0 day span, TCU can take a spot in the playoff. But that goes for the Cowboys, too – except it’ll take 2. Kansas State and West Virginia, the respect wasn’t really there, and then came the 5. Kansas and the 7. Texas Tech to set up the big November. TCU, Baylor, and Oklahoma all come to Stillwater – there’s no excuse not to be in the playoff considering they have everything set up almost perfectly. Last year, TCU rolled 4.
Oklahoma State losing streak. Both teams appear to be better this time around. Why TCU Will Win The defense has it figured out.
It took a while through rough injury issues and suspensions to get things on track – going through a rough patch in late September and with a rocky game against Kansas State. But the D has become better against the run over the last few weeks and has been just solid enough in the secondary to keep teams from staying alive. Texas, Kansas State and West Virginia all completed fewer than 5. Iowa State threw well, it wasn’t nearly enough. No, this isn’t the TCU D like other Gary Patterson teams, but it’s good enough to go along with the unstoppable offense. It’ll take at least 4.
Oklahoma State to hang around, and that’s not a given. Why Oklahoma State Will Win The pass rush has to get to Trevone Boykin before he gets comfortable. Emmanuel Ogbah and the defensive front have been fantastic at making things happen in the backfield on a regular basis, and while they weren’t able to slow down the Texas Tech attack last week, they were able to hold serve just enough to let Mason Rudolph and the OSU offense do their thing. Everyone knows about Boykin, the Baylor quarterback situation, and Baker Mayfield, but Rudolph and the OSU passing game – helped by J.
W. Walsh as a red zone closer – have been ultra- efficient with well over 4. Kansas. The offense is revving up at the right time, and the defense is just disruptive enough to do what it has to for a few key drives here and there. Player Who Matters There’s no stopping TCU WR Josh Doctson. Trevone Boykin continues to play like a true Heisman candidate, but it’s Doctson who’s helping to make him look great with 7. Tremendously consistent, he has at least two touchdown grabs in each of the last six games – with three against Texas Tech – to go along with six straight 1. Last year he destroyed the Cowboys with seven catches for 2.
What’s Going To Happen? Oklahoma State can’t tackle. Not ignored in last week’s 7. Texas Tech was that neither team could seem to come up with a good defensive play – even though the Cowboys came up with stops and a key pick to slow things down in the second half. The TCU defense will come through a bit stronger, and Boykin will by Boykin. TCU just doesn’t take weeks off, and it’s not going to start now.
